DEFINITION OF TERMS

 [ top ]

A scholarship is a cash award given to a student primarily on the basis of academic standing.

A bursary is an award given to a student who has attained a certain level of achievement and is in need of financial assistance to continue his/her education.

A prize is a small award given in recognition of some specific superior accomplishment. Prizes may be in the form of such things as books, plaques, subscriptions or cash.

LOANS/GRANTS

A loan is advanced on the understanding that the money will be repaid upon the completion of one’s studies. The Federal and Provincial Governments both provide student loan plans. A grant is financial assistance from public funds in support of a specific project usually awarded at a graduate level.

The Student Finance Board administrates both Province of Alberta and Canada Students Loans. Both loans are applied for on one application. Forms are available in early May in the counselor's office.

Start your research early. This book is not a complete list of scholarships.

Awards/scholarship criteria, value and deadlines change frequently. This package, at the time of printing, contains accurate information to the best of our knowledge.

Please inform the Counseling Department if there is any change to the status of information contained in this book.

It is the student’s responsibility to process any scholarships for which they may qualify. Some applications require extensive preparations. We recommend application process to begin one month before deadline. Follow these steps:

1. Review this booklet and highlight the scholarships for which you qualify.

2. Request a copy of the scholarship application from the counseling department and review criteria with a counselor.

3. Prepare your C.V. Make a copy of your C.V. plus the scholarship criteria and give them to each person who is writing a reference letter on your behalf.

4. Students are responsible for completing the process by mailing or delivering their scholarship application before the due date.

All students should check with their parents’ employers, clubs, associations and community leagues for additional information and scholarship opportunities.

All post-secondary institutions offer undergrad entrance scholarships . Inquire through awards offices at the particular institution.

Extensive scholarship and career search information can be accessed through the Internet (see pages 33, 34).

Students must insure a transcript of their final marks is sent to each institution to which you are applying. Applications for transcripts are available through the Counseling Department, Student Services, or Alberta Learning on line. (Need Alberta Education I.D. number, credit card, plus make a declaration). Request your transcript mid June (use a time code of "2").

For additional information and resources check with Mr. Dumont.
