Minister’s Youth Council

Minister’s Youth Council

As you know, student voice is essential to a strong, robust education system. One of my main priorities as Minister of Education is to listen to the thoughts, experiences and ideas of the more than 700,000 students across Alberta. One way I can achieve this is through the Minister’s Youth Council.

In October 2021, council members met virtually for the first meeting of the school year, where they learned about leadership, the education system, government process, mental health, post‑secondary and more. I am incredibly proud of this year’s council members for sharing their valuable perspectives with me, and I look forward to meeting with them again later this month to continue our important conversations.

I am pleased to announce that recruitment for the 2022/23 Minister’s Youth Council will officially begin on February 14, 2022. We are looking for approximately 40 junior and senior high school students between the ages of 14 and 19, with diverse interests, identities, backgrounds and perspectives from across Alberta to join.

Of the 40 council members, we will accept up to eight returning members and at least 32 new members. Participating in the council will give students the opportunity to make a real impact on Alberta’s education system, build their leadership skills and leave a legacy that will last for generations to come.

The deadline for students to apply is March 25, 2022. For more information, please visit alberta.ca/student-engagement. Attached to this email, you will find a postcard and poster for promotional purposes.

If you have questions, please contact Jaclyn Landry, Consultant, Strategic Engagement Branch, at jaclyn.landry@gov.ab.ca or 780-289-1352 (toll-free by first dialing 310‑0000).

I look forward to working with Alberta’s students to continue strengthening our education system.

Sincerely,

Adriana LaGrange

Minister of Education
